Just Be - 7 Ways to Minimize Holiday Stress and Weight Gain


As the holiday season rapidly approaches, a collective scream rises "Not again!" as the added demands to decorate, cook, shop, party, and attend family events cram into already jam-packed schedules. Something has to give in the desperate effort to do everything. Thankfully, the magic of the season causes baked goods and candy sprout out of countertops. A little chocolate to soothe the soul and squash the hunger won't hurt, right? Wrong!

The added stressors of the holidays plus a wealth of food add up to recipe for a thicker waistline. Many people relieve stress by indulging in comfort foods - a decadent apple pie, rich chocolate brownie, or plateful of creamy mashed potatoes drowned in gravy. Chances are these foods are associated with a past happy memory and the taste brings us back to that happy place. In fact, over time, our brains become programmed to release feel-good hormones that reduce stress and increase a sense of calm when we eat our favorite comfort foods. The opportunities to self-soothe with food skyrocket during the holidays as the demands on our time and resources increase and food crops up in abundance at every turn.

So how can you manage stress without indulging and soothing yourself with comfort foods? Here are seven strategies to help you minimize holiday stress at the source and start the new year without an expanded waistline.

Be intentional.

Instead of scrambling to meet the demands of the holiday season, decide now how you want your holiday season to unfold. What traditions are most important? How many events do you want to attend? Do you want to simplify decorating, cooking, shopping? Set positive intentions regarding your food choices and eating habits as well. Envision passing up the tray of goodies in the office or getting one plate of food heaped with fruit and veggies at a party. What you see as a possibility, you are more likely to achieve. By clarifying intentions, you clarify what you will say yes to, which makes saying no easier, too.

Be positive.

Our minds run an endless tape filled with messages that affect our stress level and how we respond to that stress. Negative thoughts like "I will never finish my shopping before Christmas Eve" or "I lose all control around anything sweet" become self-fulfilling prophecies. Why? These thoughts lock in your response and cut off your ability to see solutions. You believe no other time to shop exists other than Christmas Eve. You believe the goodies hold irresistible power so you succumb to their calling. Small shifts in thinking reclaim possibilities and create powerful behavioral changes. "I have plenty of time to shop before Christmas Eve" opens the door to other times for shopping. "I don't need to eat sweets just because they are there" provides you with the choice to pass them up.

Be realistic.

Adjust your expectations and challenge your rules. Do you need to send cards to everyone you've ever met or did you make this up? Do you need to buy "the perfect gift" for everyone? Consider your favorite holiday for a moment. Did you remember the gift you got or the people you were with and what you did? Most often, people remember experiences, not things. With food, accept that you will have some holiday treats. Then, plan when you will have them and control portions.

Be frugal.

Budget your time, money and calories. All of these exist in limited quantities and overspending in any area creates stress. Develop a holiday budget that includes food, clothing, and decoration expenses. Schedule shopping, baking, and personal time in addition to holiday events. Including all activities assures you can avoid feeling rushed and be realistic about how much time you have to spend on tasks. With eating, remind yourself not everyday between Thanksgiving and New Years provides cause for holiday eating. Choose only two or three occasions to indulge.

Be pampered.

Do things you love. Get a massage as a gift to yourself. Read a book. Watch your favorite holiday movie or special. Pampering yourself reduces stress and the likelihood of turning to food for comfort.

Be physical.

Exercise releases endorphins that reduce stress and create energy. Exercise also combats those holiday pounds. Exercise does not need to be complicated. Do an extra lap at the mall with your shopping bags and consider the bobbing and weaving agility training. Play with your children or grandchildren. Plan a holiday walk or football game before dinner.

Allocate a specific amount of money to your monthly budget to make allowances for gifts, decorations and food during the holidays. If you aren't living on a budget, this is a good time to start. Holiday Stress Tips


Holiday stress tip #1-

If you do not actually have a saber tooth tiger leaping towards you, and you are feeling that jittery feeling in your gut, then it is your thought about something (or several things) that is bringing the stress physiology into your body. To change the physiology, simply change the thought.

Sounds simple doesn't it?

There are some complicating factors that I do not see addressed in many stress management programs or trainings which I think are important for holiday stress management or any other time of the year stress management. If you are not actually in danger from an aggressor, then it is your thought that brings the stress response into your body.

For example, when I look at my social calendar for the month of December, I find myself scheduled to attend a number of social functions, which I would prefer not to attend.

So the thought about being in a crowd of people, none of whom will attack me by the way, several weeks ahead of time will bring an uncomfortable feeling into my body, which will be strong enough for me to notice. That is a stress response, and when I decide that I would prefer to feel something else besides stress, then I will need to deal with...

Holiday Stress Tip #2-

The physiology of stress, especially for men, if it has been strong, can take about 20 minutes to clear from the body. That is why a time out process can be important for stress reduction.

John Gottman, Ph.D., talks about what he calls Diffuse Physiological Arousal in his workshop The Art and Science of Love, describing the stress response to a tee. What Gottman does not mention is that my stress response is designed to come on line fast and strong, to motivate a leap away from the tiger.

Mihalyi Csikszentmihaly, Ph.D., in his book FLOW says the human central nervous system processes packages of data, sound waves, photons for vision, pressure for touch, tastes, smells, ect. at the rate of a package every 1/18th second.

Paul Ekman,Ph.D. says that we respond to facial expressions in perhaps 1/25th second, and Micheal Merzenich, Ph.D. says Senior Drivers need to process changing road conditions in 1/45th second.

It takes me about 1/10th second to blink my eyes. The point is that the stress response happens fast, and it takes some time to change your physiology back to calm if the diffuse physiological response was strong.

Stress management programs need to teach that information, so that folks who are using visualization or breathing or a combination of those stress management techniques do not give them up because they do not experience an immediate return to a Norman Rockwell vision of the holidays, which feels like calmness and contentment.

I do think that if I have practiced breathing and visualization techniques, for example, Open Focus, from Les Fehmi, then my body may return to a resting state faster than it would if I were just beginning my practice. What News is There From the Research? Are there holiday stress tips from recent research? Yes, there is and the most promising, in my experience, is based on technology from the new field of neurocardiology, which is the study of the heart's own nervous system.

With some practice, I can teach my heart to change the coherence or time between heart beats from incoherent to coherent much faster than the 20 minutes that Dr. Gottman talks about in his DPA descriptions.

And this process, called heart rate variability biofeedback, works in the proverbial heart beat, using thinking and breathing tools, so as I contemplate my December social schedule, and bring a stress response, way ahead of time, I can do my heart rate variability biofeedback and return my feelings to quiet contentment now.

I have been using heart rate variability biofeedback with anger management and domestic violence clients for about 8 years, because it helps me show clients,using the computer's feedback, how fast thoughts change physiology, either in a helpful or unhelpful direction, and how simple it is to sustain long periods of heart rate variability coherence by choosing to think cooperative and affiliate thoughts more often than not.

Heartmath does not require one to become a guru, and chant a mantra, it fits with our life style and busy schedules.

Once I train the brain in my heart to become coherent, I can think my cue thought and breath deeply and feel a very pleasant feeling in my body, a feeling so different than an unnecessary stress response. I can do this process every five minutes for 2 heart beats, and begin to steer my physiology towards the kind of physiology that encourages neurogenesis, or the growth of new brain cells, and neuroplasticity, which is the growth of new connections between neurons.

Increased brain fitness is a side effect of Heartmath? Sure is, and if you are an athlete or a student, the key to peak performance is relaxation, not stress.

Holiday Stress Tip #3- Learn and do heart rate variability biofeedback. It took me six 1/2 hour practices to make a serious improvement in my ability to cue the relaxation without a computer. You will feel it happening.

During these already very stressful economic times it is even more important for your health, sanity and finances that you keep all aspects of this holiday season as simple and stress free as possible. With the added hustle and bustle it is very easy for the holiday stress to become overwhelming very quickly. The best way to keep the added stress in check is to recognize up front that you have to make necessary adjustments this year.

Make a plan and stick to it. A little pre-planning can go a long way. Every good general has a specific plan of attack going into battle. Start with the big picture then break it down into each event including social gatherings, time with family and friends, shopping, cooking, gift wrapping, etc.
Create a list for each event during the entire holiday season then make sure that as you accomplish each task on each list check it off. You will be amazed at how much stress relief and pleasure you will get out of the simple task of checking each item off and knowing your list is complete prior to each specific event.
During the planning process don't forget to plan in the time element. Timing is everything! If you give yourself the time to get each task and list accomplished then you will be able to enjoy yourself rather than hurrying, fretting and stressing about unaccomplished tasks.
Once you have created your list for each event review the big picture again, set priorities and eliminate those things that aren't absolutely necessary, cause extra financial burden, take too much of your time and/or interfere with the things you enjoy the most.
Make a budget along with your plan. The hard part is forcing yourself to stick to the budget. You have to realize that overspending causes not only holiday stress but has an adverse affect on your finances while you are trying to pay off the holiday debt. Plan how much you are going to spend during the overall season (the big picture) then break it down for each event and force yourself not to impulse buy.
Recognize that just because you have done something specific during every holiday season in the past you do not have to do it again this year. Everyone understands these are challenging and stressful times. Even if you have not been major adversely affected by the economy, you still need to take the opportunity to make this holiday season more simple and less stressful.
You can say "NO". You are now officially empowered to say "NO". NO to impulse buying (stick to the budget/plan/list), NO to taking on extra tasks (review your priorities), NO to that extra party (again review your priorities), NO to overeating, NO to spending over your budget, NO to eliminating time just for you!

Holiday Stress Prevention in 10 Easy Steps


1. Set realistic expectations.

The greatest way to find disappointment in the holiday season is to set unrealistic expectations. If we focus on having a "perfect" holiday or on competing with the greatest holiday season in our memory, then we are indeed likely to be disappointed and overly stressed as we sense our dream rapidly going down the drain. Don't be judgmental of the experience in advance or as it is occurring in the moment. If we expect the holidays to be dreadfully terrible, then they likely will be as we will only be able to see all that is wrong since that is what we are looking for at every moment. When we have no preconceived expectations, we are less likely to be disappointed or stressed. Live moment to moment and do not take things personally that other people are doing or saying. Everyone is in their own 'stuff' and at their own level of consciousness at every moment. It is all in Divine Order.

2. Everything in moderation- do not overindulge.

Avoid too much alcohol and other substances as they lower impulse control and create potential drama (see below). Substances can provoke or worsen depression and anxiety. Avoid overeating all that wonderful food that is in front of you no matter where you turn as it can contribute to lowered self-esteem and self-judgment. All the sweet temptations and can also wreak havoc with blood sugars, which can cause mood swings and make it difficult to sleep at night. Excess caffeine can also interrupt sleep as well as making you jittery and nervous. Make certain you get plenty of rest and stay hydrated with water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated, non-carbonated fluids. Bah-humbug!

3. Don't overextend your self in terms of events.

Structure your time during the holidays rather than reacting to what happens. Consider how, where and with whom you will celebrate the season- from a Thanksgiving trip to your hometown through New Years Eve celebrations. Make certain that you do not schedule too many gatherings in close proximity that will make you feel constantly rushed or feel pushed to get from place to place. Schedule down time for your self to relax.

4. Budget your spending before shopping and stick to it.

Do not make January bill-paying an extension of the holiday stress. By setting your limit in advance and sticking to it, you will not start a sliding scale toward ruin as you 'allow' your self to spend that extra dollar on each person on your list. If you cannot afford to spend for all extended family members, then have everyone agree in advance to put names in a hat and draw out one name per person and set a limit to spending. Do not compete with anyone for holiday gifting- you can never win and you will regret it later. Consider using your creative talents and making a simple gift from the heart and not from the wallet. Do not make it your motto to "Give til it hurts". You cannot buy love- and no one will be impressed.

5. Decrease drama and chaos.

Avoid having your family being filmed as the Jerry Springer Holiday Special. Do not get into a new relationship at the last moment just so you do not have to be alone for the holidays. Do not provoke family or friends with gifts that are designed to make them feel guilty, take revenge, or to teach them a lesson they are not interested in learning. If there is one ounce of you that is saying in an inner still small voice "maybe I shouldn't be doing this", then DON'T. Enough said. Consider avoiding dramatic people in your life or those energy vampires if you do not really have to be around them. If you do have to be around negative or dramatic people that create negative experiences, consider using our 'La Cucaracha' Technique. Remember, when you speak, it is better to be kind than to be right.

6. Keep the true spirit of the season.

No matter what your up-bringing or religious background, recall that this is the time of year for expressing and exploring your spirituality. It is traditionally a time for joy, love, compassion and giving. You might consider volunteering in your community and possibly sharing that experience with your family or children- in a soup kitchen, battered women's shelter, or children's home or hospital. True abundance is about sharing and contributing.

7. Keep the magic in the holidays.

Do you recall the magic of the holidays from when you were a child? If you or your parents played Santa, put food out for the reindeer, believed in elves, went out at midnight to see if the animals talked, or played with a dreidel, then continue the magic. Pass this heritage on to your children or grandchildren or find surrogate children in your life to play with. Hide a pickle ornament on your tree, hide a stuffed elf doll in different spots in your home each day, play secret Santa, or start other silly traditions that keep playfulness and magic alive in your heart and in your home.

8. Create healthy family traditions.

Design rituals for your family that you feel comfortable with and that will bring you love and joy throughout the holiday season. Do not get stuck in a holiday rut. Family traditions have to start somewhere; you can start a tradition anew and pass it forward. You can expand and connect with new people and practices.

9. Remember to have fun and treat your self!

Put your self on you own holiday list. De-stress in healthy ways with exercise and massage or other enjoyable activities.

10. Have compassion for your children if you are separated, divorced or are dealing with blended families.

The Holidays After Divorce:

5 Things to Do:

1. Be sensitive to the fact that your children are looking forward to the holidays with you and also with your ex. Do not take it personally that children like to spend time with both parents. Create new or continue old holiday traditions to make your children feel good about the holidays.

2. Do coordinate big gifts with your ex. There is nothing like the letdown of both of you getting your child the same big gift. It is a letdown for both the parent and the child and is completely avoidable by communication between both parents.

3. Do send a card to your ex's family if you are close to them. It is natural to still have feelings for them if you were close emotionally to them. However, do not say anything derisive or negative about your ex in the card.

4. Call a truce with your ex in the spirit of the holidays if you do not have mutually respectful relationship or still harbor animosity toward them. The holidays are a time to transform anger and to have goodwill to all men (and women)... even if that includes your ex.

5. Do take care of your self during the holidays- take time to de-stress in healthy ways (exercise, massage, good nutrition, refrain from over-indulging in food or alcohol). If the children are not with you over the holidays, then plan to do something that would be fun and nurturing rather than sitting at home and being miserable.

5 Things Not to Do:

1. Do not compete with your ex to out-do in gift-giving.... it only spoils the children and makes everyone feel uncomfortable (including the children).

2. Do not punish the children for having a good time with your ex or sharing stories of the good times they had at your ex's home. Don't you want your children to have good memories of their holidays? They have a good time with you too and are also sharing that with your ex. Your children need to feel happy and loved in both homes and not be made to feel guilty about it.

3. Do not send a mean card to either your ex or your ex's family. If you can't say something nice (especially during the holidays), then don't send anything at all.

4. Do not tell your children how lonely you are when they are not with you over the holidays. It is NOT fair to make your children feel responsible for your feelings, thoughts or behaviors. We are very powerful in our choices, and we can either choose to be miserable or choose to be happy. After all, the adults were the ones who chose to get a divorce. The children just have to deal with the situation.

5. Do not over-extend your self over the holiday with attempts to be super-parent to outdo your ex (by volunteering in the school, with sports team, or community parties).

Stop Pulling Out Your Hair Over Holiday Stress


Mary enjoyed stress relief before the holiday season; however, (Christmas) holiday stress seems to overwhelm her and cause her to pull out her hair.

So Mary requested my help in dealing with holiday stress and pulling out her hair.

In order to assist her, I asked Mary to provide me with her concerns that created the havoc of holiday stress?

Here are her answers.

1. I do not have enough time to prepare for the holidays.

Reality Check 1

The Christmas holiday season comes around every 365 days.

Mary's holiday stress and hair pulling developed because she waited until the last minute to start her Christmas preparations. Mary used to get stress relief by the rush of preparing for Christmas and then crashing and burning after Christmas day.

Over the years this rush of stress relief and pulling out her hair has resulted in overwhelming holiday stress. Her survival system (pulling out her hair) which was once so effective is no longer working.

2. I have issues visiting my extended family.

Reality check 2

Holiday stress and hair pulling are created by not accepting people's behavior because you think they should behave differently.

The easiest way to solve the problem of holiday stress and stop pulling out you hair is to become aware of the things about the people that you do not like and accept in advance that that's the way they are going to behave.

Holiday stress and pulling out your hair can become immobilizing when you think you can change somebody. It is not likely to happen.

3.I put pressure on myself to be perfect.

Reality check 3

You may want to prepare the perfect meal and in your desire to be perfect you may leave out an ingredient. A client, let's call her Sue, baked a cake and forgot to include an ingredient. The cake tasted wonderful and she got all kinds of compliments about it.

Sue was still stressing out and pulling out her hair because she was not perfect enough to remember to put in all the ingredients.

If you were to look carefully at yourself, you know about all the silly things you have done, subsequently there is no way you can be perfect. So what is your reason for allowing the feeling of holiday stress and pulling out you hair to creep on you when your cake is not perfect, but yet still enjoyable?

4.I feel guilty if I do not visit my extended family.

Reality check 4

Holiday stress and pulling out your hair can sometimes be created by what you do not do. Mary's concern was that if she did not visit her extended family (In-Laws or out-laws!) she felt guilty.

When Mary understood that she could accept the idiosyncrasies of her extended family if she stopped judging them by her standards, the nasty feeling of holiday stress and pulling out her hair was replaced by the profound experience of amazing holiday stress relief.

5.I don't have time to put the decorations.

Reality check 5

The concept of being perfect was again creating holiday stress for Mary and making her to pull out her hair.She wanted to put up the decorations a certain way and no matter how well her husband and children put up the decorations Mary was unhappy.

She felt that she was the only one who could put up the decorations perfectly. Consequently, her husband and children would sit around and watch television because Mary did not appreciate their help. This behavior really infuriated and inflamed Mary's holiday stress as she continued to pull out her hair.

As a hypnotherapist, NLP Trainer and Energy worker, some of my clients are very myopic in their perceptions of coping strategies for stress. My responsibility is to help them find themselves within themselves.

So what is the moral of the story?

Holiday stress can make you pull out your hair by wanting to have a perfect Christmas holiday.

Profound holiday stress relief can be experienced when you first accept that you are not perfect and by being able to embrace the faults of your extended family.

When you notice your feelings of accepting everybody and everything around you, although they may not meet your standards or expectations, it makes it is easier for you to relax because the pressure of the sound of holiday stress has been neutralized.

Stress Management - 3 Steps to Eliminate Holiday Stress


Much of our holiday stress is self induced. We all love the holidays and want to them to be a truly enjoyable and rewarding experience. We tend to spend a great deal of time and effort engaging in various activities trying to make the time period extra special. Our desire to have the best holidays possible often delivers an ironic just like O'Henry's Gift of the Magi. Instead of enjoying the holiday season, we spend our holiday season stressed and worried about how to make our holidays perfect.

One of the chief causes of holiday stress is that gnawing feeling that the things you must do are going to outstrip your available time. Shopping, cooking, packing, wrapping and decorating suddenly fill what used to be your free time.

There are a few basic steps you can take to make your to-do list seem more manageable and to reduce your stress level.

1. Adjust Your Expectations

An often overlooked way to deal with holiday stress is simply readjusting your expectations of the holidays. The media and advertising industries lead us to believe that any holiday celebration that doesn't end up resembling a Norman Rockwell print is a failure. This of course, is not the case. It's fine to strive for a wonderful holiday season, but it's not necessary to create the Perfect Holiday nor is it possible. Instead of concerning yourself with every detail, you can reduce your stress level by focusing on the parts of the holidays that are most meaningful and important to you and placing less emphasis on other aspects of the season.

2. Start Early

Here's a rule about holiday stress we shouldn't break - start early. We often laugh at the fact Christmas decorations tend to go up in shopping malls right after Halloween decorations disappear. Although we don't necessarily need to take the not-so-subtle message of holiday commercialization to heart, we can learn quite bit from the early decoration trend. By starting our holiday preparations early, you can reduce the amount of pressure and stress you experience during the season.

3. Follow Santa's Lead

Santa Claus, the song tells us, makes a list and checks it twice. If he left delivery of millions of toys up to his memory, he would probably be the North Pole's most stressed resident. You can learn an important lesson from Santa Claus and can create your own organized list of holiday tasks and chores. By carefully assessing your holiday needs and expectations, starting early on the holidays and keeping an organized to-do list, you can make your holidays a pleasure!
